11:45 am - Enduring mysteries of Malayalam Cinema

jayasankarvs
# How come nobody else in Rajamanickam speak with the local accent?

# Speaking of accents, what happened to Mohan Lal's pucca Thrissur accent in the second half of Thoovanathumbikal, when the movie gets serious?

# Why did Meera Jasmine masquerade as a male in the initial parts of Rasathanthram? What did it have to do with the price of beef?

# What does Sagar Alias Jacky mean?

9:24 pm - The magic of Naadodikattu...

locks
I have probably watched this film a hundred times or more and yet I am always struck by the simplicity of the film and the intertwined humor that is so situation specific that it hardly seems like a comedy even though that's one of the strengths of the film.

Dasa, aara ee alavalaadhi?
Look man, I am not alavalaadhi. I am Pavanaazhi.

Or
Sasiettan bharaniyilaa!

or Innocent's scathing dialogues - 'Naateelennu vannethiya randu kurushangalaa' or even better is Mamukoya's plan about steering a launch to California via Dubai!

jayasankarvs
Apparently Priyadarsan has got the rights to remake Katha Parayumbol in Hindi with Shah Rukh Khan playing himself (ha!)

And who will play Srinivasan? Paresh Raval? Akshay Kumar? Rajpal Yadav?

The Tamil version (reportedly Tamil-Telugu bilingual) is called Kuselan.

9:55 pm - Suresh Gopi... Grrr!

locks
I saw a few snippets from a new film Time starring Suresh Gopi, Padmapriya and a very pretty heroine whose name I missed. Suresh Gopi is awful to watch, even in just those few scenes! His terribly patronising manner coupled with the compulsive need to insert English into his dialogues makes him absolutely irritating to watch... :( For some reason, he has turned into this guy who is always sermonising everyone around. Reminds me of Sunny Deol, screaming and sunaaoing the whole world! Suresh Gopi was so endearing in his old films and now he's this huge, puffy Uncle who always appears pleased with himself... :(

current mood: aggravated

10:50 pm - Didn't I post here some months back?

locks
And no one has posted ever since. Endu patti? I was in Toronto a couple of weeks back and I was lucky enough to attend a fund raising concert by Venugopal and Jyotsna. It was organized by a group collecting funds to build a Guruvayoorappan temple in Brampton, Canada. My niece had some duties at the event and she asked if I wanted to go along. I jumped at the opportunity - it was so totally worth it. They sang for more than three hours. He is an excellent singer, obviously. He sang some of his well known numbers - Chandana Manivaathil, Onnaam Raagam Paadi and Unarume Gaanam among others. He also sang snippets from the new songs - Sneham Thenalla from Mayavi. I like that song - btw, what does 'Kailace' mean???

Jyotsna was FABULOUS! She has great stage presence and amazing energy. Vivacious and charming, she totally bowled over the audience. She sang Chandralekha from Thiruda Thiruda and Crazy Kiya Re from Dhoom 2 among other tracks. Can hardly believe that she is only 21. Btw, she is from Thrissur too, YAY! The crowd kept asking her for adipoli numbers and she gracefully obliged... Some songs required her to sing in two different voices (Kaathirunna pennalle from Classmates) and she was so good at it - effortless and smooth.

My niece (who is a singer in her own right in that she sings regularly at all the Onam-Vishu and other functions in the city) felt that Venugopal was not versatile enough since he kinda paled on the adipoli numbers. Anyway, he has a lovely voice and he is an excellent singer. The concert made my weekend, it totally did!

4:01 pm - Two questions

locks
1. Where can I buy Malayalam film DVDs from in Kerala? I should be visting during Jan-Feb 2007.

2. There is a film song I remember vaguely. Starring Sithara, Jayaram and Ashokan, it ends with 'kannuneer thudakkaate, onnum parayaate, neeyum njaanum oranyane pole' or something like that. Anyone remember this one?

2:44 pm - Chandana manavaathil

locks
Since a couple of days, I have been captivated by the song 'Chandana mani vaathil' from the film Marikkunnilla Jnaan. The lyrics are intriguing ('...Shringaara chandrika neeradi... endayirunnu manassil') - I don't know what the context of the song is and what exactly the lyrics mean. Any help?

I was thinking of registering on the website http://www.sriranjani.com. Has anyone been there before?

current mood: curious

3:09 pm - Devasuram

locks
On our India trip this time, we made a visit to Guruvayoor. Spent a night at Elite International and watched the Shiveli twice. There was a plan to wake up for the Vakacharthu but no one had the energy to do so and that plan flopped. I managed to get hold of a few Malayalam film VCDs at one of the small stores there. Devaasuram, Manichithrathaazhu, Naadodikattu, Balettan. I have watched all these films in the past except the last one. Yesterday, I watched Devaasuram for the nth time. The film has its own share of unnecessary fights and histrionics but the characterisations are wonderful. So are the dialogues, the music score, the performances. Soorya kireedam is one of my favourite songs. I also like the song sung by Neelakanthan while asking for forgiveness from Appu Maashu, 'Maapu nalku mahaamate, maapu nalku gunanidhe...'. I wonder if it is from a Kathakali play and if so, which one? Another song I like is 'Vandhe Mukhunda Hare, jaya shaure...' sung by the Edakka player (Don't recall the name of the character played by Oduvil) at the doorsteps of the Mangalassery home.

What I really like about the film is, the radical change Life brings forth in Neelakanthan. When he finds out about the shame surrounding his birth, when he feels the regret at having insulted Bhanumathi, when his mother passes away - then onwards, he seems to be marked for the worst situations and then he finally emerges out of it all, victorious. The violence at the end could have been avoided but that's the way film panned out.

A good film, I think.

Recently watched, Vismayathumbathu, a movie produced in the year 2004. The movie's different approach to visuals motivated me to write about it. Click here to go to the review.

vettupoth The most funniest movie dialogues....

10:45 am - the most regressive thing about malayalam movies ...
callmedeep the most regressive thing about malayalam movies has got to be this one comment i keep hearing in mallu movies.

"oru penn ayal, korachu anusarnayum, odhukam okke venam"

equivalent in hindi - 'ladki hai to ladki jaisa reh'

or something to that effect.

the translation for which would be - girls need to be more well-mannered and shy and obedient and ...

more often than not this is followed by a slap on the girl's cheek.

are they just being true to character played in the movie or are they propagating something here?

i do find this very strange coming from what should be the most progressive state. the only state where we
do not touch the feet of elders, and a woman need not cover their heads in front of elders. [sure the hand that points to the moon is not the moon and the head covered is just symbolic, but that is the point - it is symbolic! of a progressive mind !]

9:10 am - Perumazhakalam - again
callmedeep ok no more raving of Perumazhakalam.

however, this is to ppl who know their ramayan and mahabharat well.

is there an equal/equivalent of Kavya Madhavan chracter in ramayan and mahabharat?
preferably avoid any act by ram and krishna. its all well to say they were human avataars, but they did perform miracles. they were gods.

i have asked a lot of people in the real world. none of my friends could help.

reason i ask is because they say "there's nothing that's not there in Mahabharat".

how can there not be forgiveness!
